On 31st October 2022, National Parks Board (NParks) conducted a talk and workshop on the Fundamentals of Gardening. Garden Specialist from NParks, Mr Goh Yi Hui thoroughly introduced all about gardening, such as the optimal conditions needed for plants to grow, parts of a plant, differences between organic and inorganic fertilisers, to the processes of pruning and pest management.

Mr Goh also encouraged the practice of reusing any containers or bottles to be used as gardening receptacles, by drilling holes at the base. In the second part of the workshop, students and staff participants moved to SHATEC’s very own edible garden, and learnt the essential skill of properly clipping from stalks of plants via stem-cutting, to be rooted in a new planter and resume propagating or growing!

NParks is also home to the Community in Bloom initiative, which sees 1,600 community gardens islandwide, ranging from schools, organisations, to public and private housing estates.
