Important Notice:
From 1 October 2023, participants who are attending SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG)'s funded courses must take their attendance digitally via the Singpass App for attendance-taking for both physical classroom and synchronous e-learning courses.

To ensure seamlessness of attendance-taking, participants are encouraged to download the Singpass App on their mobile phones (with a camera) or tablets (with a camera) and set up their Singpass accounts (if this was not done previously) before their respective courses start.

Course Description

This course is an advanced level qualification for professionals working in the wine industry and for wine enthusiasts.

The WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines is designed to give a thorough understanding of the factors that account for the style, quality and price of the principal still, sparkling and fortified wines of the world. This qualification will assist those who are required to make professional evaluations of wines with regards to their style, quality and price. The qualification provides the in-depth product knowledge required to underpin job skills and competencies, for example in product selection in the retail and hospitality sectors.

Successful candidates will be able to describe the characteristics of the principal wines of the world and give information on the key factors influencing style, quality and price. They will consequently be in a position to advise management, to answer customer queries authoritatively, and to make informed selections of wines in a variety of situations.

Course Structure


Course Delivery
This qualification has a minimum requirement of 84 hours of study time, with 35 classroom hours (including 2.5 assessment hours) conducted in person and 51.5 hours of self-study.

Entry Requirements
Participant(s) must be at least 18 years old and above, i.e. legal drinking age in Singapore, to partake in any of the WSET® Programmes.

Participant(s), for religious, health or any other reason(s), who do not wish to sample any alcohol during the course, may do so (only applicable for WSET Level 1 & 2 Programmes).

Assessment
Unit 1 is assessed by a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions and a short-written answer paper. Unit 2 is assessed by a blind tasting of 2 wines. This qualification is regulated by Ofqual.

Upon successful completion of the examination you will receive a WSET® certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET® certified logo.

Results
Results will be issued based on the following timeline:
Level 3: 40 working days after receipt of pack returned to WSET

SHATEC will inform participants of your results via email once we have received the Gradelist from WSET. Your certificates and lapel pin will come at a later date and you will be advised of the collection details once we have received them.

Re-sit of Exam
Please note that if you have not passed the exam, you will be required to attend a re-sit (in order to be eligible for any course fee funding).

The exam re-sit fee is as follows:
Level 3 (Theory): S$ 175.00 per sitting (incl. GST)
Level 3 (Tasting): S$ 175.00 per sitting (incl. GST)
Level 3 (Both Theory and Tasting): S$ 300.00 (incl. GST)

Course Outline


Participants will learn:

UNIT 1

  • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling
  • How these factors influence the key characteristics of the principal still wines of the world
  • Sparkling wines of the world
  • Fortified wines of the world
  • How to apply your understanding to explain wine style and quality

UNIT 2

  • How to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

6Absentee Payroll

Absentee Payroll rate at S$4.50 per hour, capped at S$100,000 per enterprise per calendar year

* In accordance with the Budget 2022 announcement, the GST rate will be increased from:

(i) 7% to 8% with effect from 1 Jan 2023; and

(ii) 8% to 9% with effect from 1 Jan 2024.

  • 8% GST will apply to full payments received by SHATEC from 1 January 2023 onwards.
  • Full payments received by SHATEC before 1 January 2023 will have no adjustment to the 7% GST.

1Singaporeans and Singapore PRs, aged 21 and above, will be eligible for up to 50% SSG funding. Funding is subjected to SSG’s prevailing corporate policies and final approval.

2Singaporeans may also utilize available funds within their Post-Secondary Education Account (PSEA) or SkillsFuture Credits (where applicable) to offset total net course fee payable. All Singaporeans aged 25 and above can use their S$ 500 SkillsFuture Credit from the government to pay for a wide range of approved skills-related courses. Visit the SkillsFuture Credit website www.skillsfuture.sg/credit to choose from the courses available on the SkillsFuture Credit course directory.

3The SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy (MES) is for Singaporeans aged 40 years old and above.

4NTUC members enjoy 50% unfunded course fee support for up to S$ 250 each year when they sign up for courses supported under UTAP (Union Training Assistance Programme). NTUC members from 40 years and above enjoy up to S$ 500 per year. For more information and terms and conditions, please refer to https://skillsupgrade.ntuc.org.sg.

5Training support will be extended to Long Term Visit Pass Plus (LTVP+) Holders with effect from 1 October 2021. The LTVP+ scheme applies to lawful foreign spouses of Singapore Citizens (SCs) with (i) at least one SC child or are expecting one from the marriage, or at least three years of marriage, and (ii) where the SC sponsor is able to support the family. LTVP+ holders will be identified with their green visit pass cards, with the word ‘PLUS’ on the back of the card.

6SME companies are required to log-in to Enterprise Portal for Jobs and Skills to update their SME status if they have not done so. All companies will be notified to log in to the portal to declare monthly salary and hours worked per week in order to receive Absentee Payroll.

7Companies and individuals are liable for the full course fee in the event that the SSG funding and subsidy are not approved.

8Class commencement is subjected to minimum class size met. Public holidays are excluded, where applicable

Collection of Study Pack

You are highly encouraged to collect the study pack in advance prior to course commencement for pre-reading (especially for Level 2 and 3). If you would like to do so, a full payment is required before collection can be arranged. Otherwise, study packs will be given on the first day of the course.
