Welcome to the 3rd and final edition of our 3-part Webinar series 2020 proudly presented by SHATEC!

A crisis like no other. Covid19 has impacted industries, lives and livelihoods globally, and threatened the way businesses are conducted, and operations handled. The MICE industry has not been spared either. For a sector that caters to a decidedly international audience – many events aimed at bringing in an audience from top global markets – this pandemic has forced companies to quickly adapt and even re-think their business model.

MICE companies have had to encourage their team members to familiarise themselves with new virtual tools by participating in virtual product demonstrations. Employees have also had to pick up new digital skills by taking short courses on topics like live streaming and cybersecurity while learning how to capitalise on digital platforms. Hybrid events, with a mix of virtual and live attendance are now the “new normal”. Robust Safe Management Measures (SMM) which event organisers are expected to strictly implement and enforce will be in place for future MICE events.

The transition to new and hybrid event formats has created a need for more talent with new skills, with passionate and well-trained individuals known as “digital event managers” who need to know their platforms, animations and chatbots and be agile enough to ride along shifting trends. What then is the New Normal in MICE?

Rod Kamleshwaran

Partner,

Rod leads the Convention and Exhibition Centre Development advisory team at Gaining Edge, a specialist consulting firm. His expertise is in the development and asset management of hospitality assets – convention & exhibition centres, hotels, and casino integrated resorts.

A specialist in mixed-use developments, Rod has advised government and private sector clients on projects with a completion value exceeding US $20 billion. With experience advising clients on 5 continents he brings a uniquely global perspective.

Previously in leadership roles at PwC and IHG, he has a track record in the development and asset management of hotels and venues. He has been a speaker at UFI, ICCA & other industry events. His views on how the MICE sector is tracking during the pandemic has been widely published.

His past projects include Singapore, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, Oslo, Melbourne, Los Cabos, and Nairobi. He is currently advising mixed-use projects in Hong Kong, Japan and India.

Mike Lee

Mike Lee is the Vice President of Sales for Marina Bay Sands. His role is focused on enhancing aspects of the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Expositions (MICE), Business and Leisure Tourism segments at Marina Bay Sands, with a primary focus on revenue responsibility. He joined Marina Bay Sands in November 2010.

Mr Lee has over 35 years of hotel marketing, sales and developmental experience behind him. For the last two decades, he has held senior management roles, working in many hotels and resorts such as Americana Hotels, Resorts International and Wyndham Hotels. Mr Lee was also the President of his own Franchising and Hotel development companies prior to joining Marina Bay Sands.

Mr Lee attended St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y. and Georgetown University in Washington D.C.

Noor Ahmad Hamid

Noor joined the peak body in 2009 and has been successful in strengthening ICCA’s footprint as one of the most successful international association within the region. His biggest achievement is making Asia Pacific the largest Chapter in ICCA’s global community to more than 300 members.

As the face of ICCA, he has spoken in numerous conferences and training programmes. He is one of the Founding Advisory Board & Ambassador for the ASAE’s in Asia Pacific and is the only non-Chinese been inducted to the China’s CMIC Hall of Fame. He has also been recognised by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade as one of the key thought leaders for the China’s convention industry.

His goal is to help the region grow.

Richard Ireland

A Master’s graduate from the University of Sydney, Richard has been involved in ‘live events’ for the past 20 years. He has launched numerous exhibitions, conferences, training events and digital communities over a broad range of industries through Asia Pacific.

Richard is currently the Managing Director of Clarion Events Asia and his role is to expand Clarion’s footprint in the region via organic growth, launch and via acquisition. He was previously the CEO of Terrapinn Asia Pacific.

Richard has regularly trained both exhibition and conference management to industry and currently serves as the Vice President of Professional Development for the Singapore Association of Convention Organisers and Suppliers (SACEOS). Richard has consulted to a number of business media companies in Asia Pacific focusing on strategy and performance improvement.

Richard has pitched, won and managed join venture partnerships with some of the region’s and world’s largest trade associations and governments, and has been involved with various mergers and acquisitions transactions.
